Plagiocephaly: what is it?

Plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome, is a condition in which the baby’s head develops an abnormal shape. Factors that can cause plagiocephaly include sleeping in the same position for long periods of time, birth defects, trauma during birth and congenital torticollis, or abnormal growth of neck muscles.

The most common symptom of plagiocephaly is an asymmetrical head shape. The forehead, ear, or face may appear flattened on one side. Plagiocephaly can also cause the baby’s head to tilt to one side. The skull bones can fuse together in severe cases or the eyes may be misaligned. Talk to your doctor if you suspect your baby has plagiocephaly so they can diagnose and treat it.

There are many ways to treat plagiocephaly, but not all of them are effective. Some parents try using special helmets or pillows to position their baby’s head, but these methods are not proven to be effective. Plagiocephaly can be treated with cranial remodeling surgery. Cranial remodeling involves using special instruments to reshape the skull bones and correct the deformity.

What is the best time to evaluate my baby?

Plagiocephaly is a serious condition that needs to be treated as soon as possible. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the easier it will be to treat.

We specialize in craniofacial disorders and can create a customized treatment plan for your child at Cranial Technologies.

We encourage you to schedule a consultation with us if you are concerned about your baby’s head shape.

Our recommendation is to seek professional help if you are concerned about your baby’s head shape. Many babies with plagiocephaly do not require treatment, and the condition usually corrects itself over time. There is, however, the possibility that your baby will need a doctor’s evaluation if he or she has severe plagiocephaly, is older than six months, or has other medical conditions.

Cranial Technologies treats plagiocephaly in what ways?

Using asymmetrical pressure, Cranial Technologies offers a gentle and effective treatment for plagiocephaly, also called flat head syndrome.

The treatment is non-invasive and does not require surgery. It is typically started when the baby is around six weeks old and continues until four to six months old. A custom-made helmet applies pressure to specific parts of the baby’s head during this time.

A helmet is worn 23 hours a day, and is removed for bathing and sleeping. The length of treatment depends on the severity of the plagiocephaly, but most babies see significant improvement within four to six months.

With over 20 years of experience helping babies achieve a healthy head shape, Cranial Technologies is the leading provider of cranial remolding therapy.
