On June 8, Apple opened its Worldwide Developers Conference with the unveiling of iOS 27 and a long-awaited overhaul of Siri. The keynote at Apple Park marks the company’s most significant push into artificial intelligence yet, following years of criticism that Apple had fallen behind competitors in the AI race.

The 2026 conference runs through June 12 and introduces updated versions of all Apple operating systems: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. Unlike last year’s dramatic Liquid Glass visual redesign, this year’s updates prioritize stability, performance, and AI integration.
Siri Gets a Gemini-Powered Brain
The biggest change is Siri itself. Apple has rebuilt the assistant around Google’s Gemini AI models, transforming it from a basic voice command system into a chatbot capable of complex reasoning. The new Siri can handle multi-step requests, understand personal context, and see what is on the screen to provide relevant responses.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is paying Google approximately 1 billion dollars annually for access to a custom 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini model. The partnership represents a significant shift for a company that has long marketed itself as the privacy-focused alternative to Google.
Apple Intelligence Expands Across Apps
iOS 27 brings new AI features to several core apps. The Photos app gains three new editing tools called Extend, Enhance, and Reframe, building on the existing Clean Up feature. Visual Intelligence receives major upgrades within VoiceOver and Magnifier, offering more detailed descriptions of images and on-device object recognition.
Safari now uses AI to automatically organize tabs and features a redesigned start page. The Wallet app adds custom digital passes, and a new Apple Cash feature lets users split group bills simply by photographing a receipt. The AirPods settings menu has been completely reorganized.

Small Changes That Add Up
Several quality-of-life improvements arrive across iOS and iPadOS. Users can now undo and redo Home Screen layout changes. The keyboard has a new sliding animation, and notifications swipe in from the left side of the screen instead of dropping from the top.
iOS 27 will also support third-party casting protocols, a long-requested feature that has been limited to AirPlay until now. Apple confirmed performance optimization and battery life improvements as core priorities, with Gurman describing the release as a “Snow Leopard” update focused on cleanup and reliability.
The Foldable iPhone Foundation
Behind the polish, iOS 27 lays groundwork for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expected to launch in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Many multitasking and interface features needed for a folding device are being introduced quietly now, with full reveals expected at the fall hardware event.

This dual-purpose approach explains the conservative feel of some iOS 27 updates. Apple is preserving its biggest interface news for September, when it can pair software changes with the hardware that showcases them.
Who Gets What
Not every iPhone will receive every feature. The most advanced Apple Intelligence and Siri capabilities require recent hardware, likely iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Older devices will get the visual updates and standard improvements but miss out on the headline AI features.
The first developer beta of iOS 27 became available today following the keynote. A public beta will follow in July, with the final release scheduled for September. Tim Cook, whose departure as CEO has been the subject of recent speculation, delivered the keynote as Apple positions itself for what may be one of its most transformative years.
