Today, we celebrate the life of Violet Myers, aka “The Model.” Violet was born in 1937 in New York City and died on March 3rd, 2018 at the age of 88. Violet always had a passion for modeling, which she pursued from a very young age. At 16 years old, she was signed to Ford Models and began working regularly. She quickly became one of the most successful models of her time and landed campaigns for notable brands such as Maybelline, Cover Girl, Pirelli and Ben Sherman.
Despite her fame, Violet was never content with being just a model. She wanted to do more than poses in front of a camera; she wanted to use her platform to help make a difference in the world. In 1967, she founded Project Angel Food with her then-boyfriend Paul Moravec. This non-profit organization provides meals to homeless people living on the streets of New York City. Since its inception, Project Angel Food has fed over 1 million people!
Violet’s legacy will continue to live on through her work with Project Angel Food and all that she has done to help others during her lifetime. We are truly blessed to have known this incredible woman and celebrate her life today

1. Violet was born in 1941, during one of the most tumultuous times in history. World War II was raging, segregation was still prevalent, and women didn’t gain the right to vote until 1920.
2. Violet grew up in poverty, experiencing discrimination firsthand at school and at home due to her gender identity. She never stopped fighting though, seeking opportunities both inside and outside of her community to make a difference.
3. In 1978, Violet helped found the National Gay Rights Association (NGRA) – the first national organization dedicated exclusively to advancing LGBTQ+ rights. Today, NGRA is one of the leading advocates for civil rights for LGBTQ+ people around the world.
4. Throughout her career as an activist, Violet spoke out strongly against violence against LGBTQ+ people – calling it “one of humanity’s greatest blemishes.” Despite facing tremendous opposition throughout her life, she never gave up on her convictions nor on fighting for others like herself.
5. On December 8th, 2016 – exactly 50 years after she founded NGRA – Violet passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 78 after a long battle with cancer. Her legacy will continue to be felt through the work

Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese Salad
The roasted beet and goat cheese salad is a lovely and light meal that emblematic of Violet Myers’s life. The varied textures and flavors of the salad are sure to delight your taste buds.
To begin, roast the beets evenly until they are tender and slightly charred on all sides. Remove them from the oven, let them cool slightly, then dice into small cubes.
Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together crumbled goat cheese, diced red onion, finely diced fresh parsley, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
When the beets have cooled slightly, mix them into the goat cheese mixture. Finally add in pint-sized cherry tomatoes (or grape tomatoes), ending up with a balanced and pleasing salad consistency. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Thank goodness Violet Myers passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 86. Her life was one of great joy, love and laughter. Violet was born in Monroe, Louisiana to a family of sharecroppers. Despite being raised in difficult circumstances, Violet became an incredibly resilient woman and was able to achieve tremendous success both professionally and personally.
Violet’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through the lives she has touched and the endless amounts of happiness she has brought into them. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved nothing more than spending time with her family. Being a part of their lives was everything to her and she always made sure they had everything they needed.
Violet was also a tireless advocate for social justice, fighting tirelessly against discrimination and stigma whenever it came up. She was an intelligent woman whose words carried a lot of weight, making her a powerful voice in the community.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Jean; daughters Kristen (Mark) Schaffer and Athena Myers; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; as well as numerous friends and loved ones who have received immense comfort from knowing her story.
Jalapeno Popper Bombs
These Jalapeno Popper Bombs are such a fun and easy way to celebrate the life of Violet Myers! What could be better than biting into a delicious jalapeno-stuffed ball and then blowing out all the fiery heat with a cold drink? These little treats are perfect for any party or get together, and they definitely won’t leave anyone indifferent!
Ingredients:
Raspberry Jam
Jalapeno Poppers
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line an 8×8 inch baking dish with aluminum foil.
2. In a small bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons raspberry jam and 1 teaspoon chili powder. Set aside.
3. In another small bowl, mix together 1 cup panko breadcrumbs and 1 teaspoon chili powder. Set aside.
4. For the jalapeno poppers, cut off the top of each jalapeno so that it forms a nice opening large enough to fit a tablespoon of raspberry jam (approximately ½ inch wide by ½ inch deep). Spread ½ teaspoon of raspberry jam inside each jalapeno hole, then fill each hole with 1 crushed pepperoni ball, pressing down firmly so that the stuffing is secure. Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown on the outside and heated throughout. Serve immediately with your favorite cold drinks!
